GUESTBOOK
April Zanne Johnson

Communication through a universal subconscious level, as well as emphasizing the importance of myth is a steady pulse that beats beneath my painting.  I like to work on a different dimension that links human thought and experience with dreams and memories.  I intend to walk the line between the concrete and the unknown.  My aspiration is to embark upon a path integrating art and science with hope and imagination.

I portray fictitious and satirical imagery in my biomorphic forms.  These forms do not need to exist in the real scientific world, but rather enjoy living in an imaginative world of infinite possibility that is not hindered by concrete thought and rules that inevitably change.  Grounds may shift.  Foreground and background may alternate and become confusing to a viewer who feels the need to find the ground.  I prefer to explore inside this world.

Certain ideals in Buddhist thought are constant in my work but not overtly presented.  The ideas of recycled energies and metamorphosis are very important to me.   Also, Jung is inspirational to my practice as he was one of the great researchers in the field of symbolic dream analysis.  He considered individuation necessary for a person to become whole. The imagery is based upon my investigations of biomorphic forms, both factual and imaginary, as well as the microcosm and the macrocosm.

The process of sexual attraction and reproduction in all forms of life is fascinating and inspirational.  The senses work on levels of which most are not aware. Pheromones, flowers attracting other species to assist in pollination and asexual reproduction are examples.

My work is a personal response to forms in nature that initiate a cerebral awareness of the unknown, unexpected or unfathomed.   Matter can be broken down to its essence. Through repetition, juxtaposition, and interaction, they build upon one another to produce larger and more complex systems and organisms.
